What to wear to a boudoir session

By far, the most common question I get from any type of photography session, but especially a boudoir photo session, is “what should I wear?” I absolutely love this question though. And it’s certainly not because I’m a fashionista. On any given day, you’ll find me in a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt. But I promise you, I can still make a pair of sweatpants and t-shirt look sexy. And that’s why I love the question about what to wear – because it’s not necessarily the clothes that make you sexy, it’s how you carry yourself in them. So bottom line, wear what you feel comfortable wearing, and trust that I’ll capture you beautifully in them.

The recommendation of what to wear will vary from photographer to photographer when it comes to boudoir sessions. But boudoir to me is not defined by what you wear. My philosophy is that it’s your body and you have permission to wear as much, or as little, as you feel comfortable in. For some, that will be completely free of any clothing, in their birthday suit. For others, it may be lingerie or a thong and bra, or a body suit. Still, others may prefer a dress or a robe or kimono. This is YOUR session, and boudoir sessions with me are not about how much skin is showing. It’s about how you feel when you’re wearing whatever it is you’ve chosen.

I like to encourage multiple outfits during your session. For some, it may be just 2 options and still others may want 3-4 options. I usually recommend bringing in 3 outfits to have on hand, but we play it by ear and see how you’re feeling the day of the shoot. You may want to add accessories rather than a complete outfit change, and that’s okay too.

One bonus I offer to everyone who books with me is access to is my client closet. I have several dresses, kimonos, robes, and other pieces that you can borrow for your session. This is a great option if you prefer not to buy anything. However, please note that I do not offer any undergarments or lingerie. Not only is it for sanitary/hygiene purposes, but it’s such a personal choice and something you want to take your time with ensuring it fits your body properly. Most of the items I have in my closet are one size fits all.

I often get questions about stores I like when it comes to shopping for different options. Of course, there are places like Victoria’s Secret and other local lingerie stores. But I like to offer other options as well. Here are my top 5:

Free People

Free People has a whole section on their website called “Intimates.” It has a variety of beautiful options, ranging in all different categories. The section contains everything from lingerie and bodysuits to pajamas and slips. They have rompers and camis and shorts. I also love all the different colors and textures that the items are offered in. I love that you can view their options online, but you can also go in person to either Fashion Valley or University Town Center to try things on.

Lulus

On the Lulus website, there is a link to “Clothing” and then underneath that there is an option for “All Intimates and Sleepwear.” There are a TON of fun options ranging in materials from satin and feathers to lace and cotton. They have everything from sheer to opaque materials. And then they also offer beautiful dresses that are sexy and sultry as well.

Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters is a great choice because of their online as well as brick-and-mortar stores. They have a section on their website called “Intimates + Lounge” which has some beautiful options with a wide range of clothing that shows a lot of skin to clothing that covers up more.

Anthropologie

Anthropologie is one of my personal favorite stores. On their website, they have a “Intimates & Lingerie” section but also a “Pajamas & Robes” section. Even their “Getaway & Resort Wear” section has some fabulous options that would work beautifully for a boudoir session. If you’re looking for clothing that is fun, flirty, or sophisticated, you’ll find a nice range here.

Forever 21

This store may not be everyone’s ideal place to shop, but when it comes to finding some fashion options for your boudoir session, you may be surprised to find some very affordable and cute items here. Besides being able to shop online, there are 4 stores sprinkled throughout the San Diego area where you can go and try things on in person.

As you can tell, I’m not limited in thinking that you MUST wear lingerie for your session. I love all the variety and I think the magic in making anything work comes down to your confidence in wearing it. When it comes to clothing, truly anything goes!

I like fabrics that have texture like tulle and lace. I love anything that glitters and shines. Find colors that complement your skin tone. I will have more information about that in another blog post, so stay tuned. In the meantime, if you have any questions whatsoever about wardrobe or styling, I am here to help, so please don’t hesitate to reach out.
